IGNITING JOBURG WITH FRESH VISION AND PURPOSE, THE JOBURG DECOR & DESIGN WEEK IS A CURATED SCHEDULE OF EVENTS AND IMMERSIVE EXPERIENCES THAT SHOWCASE THE FUTURE OF DESIGN.

The Joburg Decor & Design Week is a platform that celebrates design as a multidisciplinary expression of creative thinking and making. It will bring talented individuals together to share ideas and resources, which accelerates the development of the design ecosystem, and helps to keep the community energised and inspired.

By creating connections, jumpstarting collaborations, and cultivating the next generation of creative leaders, it will fundamentally shift the landscape of the design industry, and increase the public’s knowledge and appreciation of design and its role in creating a sustainable future.

The comprehensive city-wide programme of events will include installations, tours, open showrooms and studios, workshops and talks, events and exhibitions that promote collaboration, creativity, and knowledge sharing.

The weeks are an excellent opportunity for designers to showcase their work, connect with others in their field, and learn from experts in various design disciplines. They also offer a chance for businesses and organisations to engage with the design community and explore new design ideas and solutions.

SA’s three leading decor and design exhibitions, Decorex Africa, 100% Design Africa and Design Joburg will be the anchor events for the week.

The Clubhouse at Stevenson Gallery

Duration: Monday 31 July to Saturday 5 July

Time: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 1pm

Venue: 46 7th Avenue, Parktown North, 2193

For winter 2023, Stevenson Johannesburg becomes The Clubhouse, and you’re invited to enjoy their spaces which have been turned from spaces of viewing into places for connecting, reading, listening and seeing.

The former Parktown North home was converted into the current gallery space in 2019. It now reverts to its domestic origins through furniture, lighting and decorative elements sourced from established and emerging local designers.

The galleries are turned into the common spaces of ‘the study’, ‘the lounge’ and ‘the dining room’. The first, constructed as a space for quiet, is stacked with special-edition and recent books on art and design. The lounge – stocked with vinyl records and a turntable – provides a space for communal repose; and the dining room, which features an installation of Deborah Poynton’s Arcadia, acts as a venue for congregation and conversation.

Tonic Design, who were instrumental in designing the original gallery space, provide the anchoring furniture pieces. Plants are supplied by JFF Plant Shop and supporting fixtures are sourced from designers including Arrange Studio, Bofred, Ex Hotel, Joe Paine, Mash.T Design Studio, Nindya Ceramics, SMTNGGOOD x Bevan de Wet, The Ninevites and Viawax.

Featured artists include Joburg Ash, Zander Blom, Wim Botha, Githan Coopoo, Georgina Gratrix, Ian Grose, Simon Gush, Pieter Hugo, Neo Matloga, Unathi Mkonto, Georgia Munnik, Hylton Nel, Thenjiwe Niki Nkosi, Deborah Poynton, Robin Rhode, Viviane Sassen, Penny Siopis and Portia Zvavahera.

On Saturday 5 August, the Joburg launch of ArtThrob’s 25th-anniversary publication will be hosted in 'the study' from 10am to 1pm.

Apero at Acid Food & Wine Bar

Time: 16:00 to 18:00

Venue: 19 4th Ave, Parktown North, Johannesburg

A special Décor & Design Week Aperitivo -  enjoy Spritzers, Pèt-Nat & Experimental Bar Snacks.

Acid Food & Wine Bar claims to be your neighbourhood food and wine bar but is way more than that. The female owners, sommelier Jemma Styer and chef Jes Doveton have created a place that feels friendly and unintimidating – yet still worthy of lipstick and a pair of heels. For the wine list, they have focussed on female producers and producers of colour and offer a wide range of unusual and regular wines. The seasonal menus have been small but never short on flavour and are normally infused with Thai flavours, a nod to Jess’s heritage.

To date Acid hasn’t opened in the afternoon so this is your chance to be one of the first to try those Experimental Bar Snacks.

No bookings required but please note bookings required via Dineplan after 6pm.

IQOQO Sessions is a series of nine inspiring talks hosted by IQOQO and taking place on 1, 2, 3 August 2023 at True Design in the Keyes Art Mile, Rosebank.

What journey did a filmmaker go on to develop their first feature? How did a fashion designer come to stage their first debut international fashion show? What led to that artist’s first major exhibition? How did a game developer create their game or that architect their first award-winning building? What is the story behind their passion for Virtual Reality? Or how did they end up working in animation?

Speakers include Milisuthando Bongela, Lady Skollie, Papama Mtwisha, Gabi Ngcobo, Shaakira Jassat, Nindya Bucktowar, Nosipho Maketo-van den Bragt, Kirstin Lee Grey and Cukia ‘Sugar’ Kimani.
