About TheUrbanative: TheUrbanative is a contemporary African furniture and product design company based in South Africa. Our furniture and products are differentiated by the juxtaposition of abstracted African cultural inspirations with the functionality & look and feel of modern materials, technologies and modern furniture silhouettes; whilst guided by the philosophies of craft, collaboration and design evolution. All of the products are designed and manufactured in South Africa. Started by Mpho Vackier an engineer turned furniture designer, TheUrbanative team constantly explores the role of culture and cultural representations and visibility in modern societies, with the aim of telling contemporary African stories through furniture and product design.

Topic: Taking SA design to the world 

Bio: Tracy's design philosophy is focused on developing a deeply conscious response to the particular requirements of her clients.  Interior design solutions must be memorable, supportive, and nurturing. The intended outcome is the realisation of a timeless solution that inspires. The collaborative aspect is hugely important to her, and she has had the good fortune to initiate and curate Nando's massive, long-term collaboration with South African designers and makers, which has involved the complete revamp of Nando's Central Kitchen as a show case of contemporary SA design and the introduction of South African design into the restaurants across the globe.

Topic: Taking SA design to the world 

Bio: Malibongwe Tyilo is a multimedia journalist and editor whose expertise lies in the fields of fashion, art, design and culture. All of which are subjects he has explored on his own online platforms, and as a columnist for various leading South African magazines and newspapers. Malibongwe is currently focused on producing video content for various partners, focusing specifically on the growth of South Africa’s design industry, product design in particular, as well as his role  as Associate Editor for Maverick Life, the Daily Maverick’s recently launched online Life and culture Magazine. He has a particular interest in documenting and writing about the evolution of creative communities and industries with within the South African context.

Topic: The Workplace - A Covid-Casualty or a Road-to-Reform? Times are changing and so is the world. What does this mean for the workplace? With many organisations determining how and when to reopen office doors, experts are focussing on transitioning work-from-home offices and flexible work arrangements. There is a responsibility of the employer to understand their employee's needs; as some employees have been more productive working from home, yet some yearn to be back in the office. Businesses will seek to find the working style best suited to their culture and strategic objectives. Future leaders need to acknowledge that the workforce has drastically changed and that work-from-home is here to stay. Take part in an engaging conversation around the transition of the workplace - which aims to highlight current trends, future possibilities, and design processes that will drive the configuration of the ultimate workspace.

Bio: Josie King is a certified ergonomist at Formfunc Studio (Pty) Ltd in Johannesburg, where she implements ergonomics into the workplace by using a holistic view. This holistic approach has allowed Josie to contextualise all factors and apply it in a variety of possible situations. Completion of an MSc Human Kinetics and Ergonomics with distinction, Josie has gained a greater understanding in relevant ergonomics principles and components which feeds into having a solid foundation of wellness in the workplace. This knowledge was achieved in anatomy, anthropometry, biomechanics, cognition, physiology and ergonomics.

Bio: Crispin is in charge of the South African part of a Smart Home manufacturer based in South Africa and Australia. They have been manufacturing smart home systems for the past 18 years and sell tens of thousands of systems a year. A number of our products have been recognised as world leading products  – not bad for a company in the South of the world! They have 12 full time R&D engineers who bring out new products and improvements every 6 months.

Stephen Falcke // Interior Designer

Topic: The lockdown has shown how important inner and outer interiors are, with the emphasis on using local suppliers in a creative environment.

Bio: Stephen was educated at King Edward School in Johannesburg. After completing the army he went to study Interior Design in England at the Chelsea School of Art and then worked for David Hicks in London.

On his return to South Africa he worked for Lionel Levine before going out on his own, and has worked on projects all over the world and have been featured in many local and overseas publications such as The Architectural Digest in America, Russia and Italy. Stepphen has also been featured in French Vogue, Italian Vogue, Australian Vogue and Interiors Magazines as well as many local magazines.

He loves South Africa and tries to work locally as much as possible, he has worked for celebrities and am at present working in 7 countries. He has been on Top Billing more than 30 times. Stephen's inspiration stems from natural organic things and I am passionate about design and people. He has won coveted designer of the world awards in England and 2 design awards in Paris from the Minister of Arts and Culture.
