100% Weave in collaboration with House and Leisure

History, industry and innovation meet and overlap in this showcase of one of the world’s oldest art forms, and an increasingly popular modern craft.

Weaving is one of the earliest and most foundational design practices in human history. Mirroring society, it demonstrates how a collection of small parts can be woven into something functional and beautiful. This exhibition explores weaving in all its facets, from traditional hand-weaving of baskets, to textiles and artworks.

Our Workshop

Heath Nash

At Our Workshop, our material choices are quite specific – we use materials often referred to as ‘waste’. But the way we see it, these materials are perfect for making upcycled products and installations. For example, by using post consumer plastic waste in Langa township (we collect, wash and then cut up old bottles) we are sharing this technique and our belief system with the broader public in the area including the local kids. In this way we are leading by example and changing minds slowly but surely.

FormFlow

Crosspolynations

FormFlow is an invitation to contribute to the creation of a cloth. A portion of the structure of 100% Weave will be transformed into a loom, providing an opportunity to engage with the craft and to leave your individual mark. Drawing from a textile history of communal quilting, the design is informed by the material and the coming together of various contributions to create a whole. The form follows the flow of weaving: an area of colour defined by the length of yarn, an addition from a new hand. Join us daily between 11:00 and 13:00 at 100% Weave to add your hand.

Obscura

Ex.Hotel X Crosspolynations

Ex.Hotel and Crosspolynations present Obscura - a free-standing folding screen, combining the traditional hand skills of joinery and weaving. Obscura is an interplay between light and shadow, the visible and the masked, the public and the private. It is intended as an elegant design solution to transform space by introducing texture, directing movement, and creating the opportunity to conceal or prompt intimacy within a larger environment. The screen is the result of a collaboration between two studios with a shared love for the processes of making things by hand, properly and with care. Designed with a modern, simple aesthetic and a focus on material, it is a simultaneous nod to the past with feet firmly in the present. The screen plays between the structural integrity of carpentry and the ephemeral lightness of hand-woven cloth.

The Way We Weave

okracandle X MYUZU

By studying the art of traditional weaving and hand manipulation we were able to interlace hand-dipped 5/8 okra candles to create our own unique pattern. Through experimenting with our raw medium, wax and wick, and with precise control of heat, we are able to achieve a malleable form. What was once considered rejects and waste were repurposed, finding new life in something greater than the sum of the parts involved. An act of true synergy. The okracandle and MYUZU collaboration happened very organically  and spontaneously with an art installation known as Death Row Dinner (Art Gallery The Fourth, 2022). Part of this was an exploration of wax dipped floral and woven candles. “The Way We Weave” is therefore a continuation of this current body of work. Death Row Dinner woven out of That Skinny Bitch Candle.

Woven Screen

Mwezi Wood

As a youngster I was involved in the craft of weaving. In my village if you wanted to earn or make your way in the world you would weave. I am from Malawi and moved to South Africa in 2016 and settled in Kalk Bay. I brought my art here because I saw a need. I saw how important beauty and functionality was in the home and in our lives. Aaron, my nephew joined in 2020, as it became clear that other products were also in demand like our custom built Nyampa Canoes, baskets, chairs, lamp shades, children's toys, room dividers, and mirror frames. We also repair furniture with our various methods of weaving and cane work. We are glad and excited to be part of Decorex 2022.

Korthoni Lamp

Mixali

Our Korthoni lamp is a handwoven feature lamp. The lamp has a black powder-coated metal frame with PPM braid cord and raffia. This lamp brings the art of hand-weaving and the art of lighting together by creating interesting light patterns and shadows. Each lamp sold is handmade and locally produced in South Africa. Due to the unique nature of hand-weaving; cord placement and framework may vary from that shown in the picture. This makes each product produced unique to your order.

Xanafantastika

Mixali

With the theme of ‘reimagine’, Mixali strived to take on the challenge to reimagine our product offerings and the materials that our products are made of in order to launch a whole new range. This resulted in improving our Korthoni lamp design and adding a new lamp with different material applications. We created new products by reimagining the use of the Basotho blanket. Despite the rich heritage and cultural significance in Lesotho, the Basotho blankets are a South African product that has been produced and manufactured in South Africa since the 1950s. We like to reimagine this product from using it as a blanket to seeing it as a fabric. Our screen is designed to bring the culmination of both reimaginations, our Korthoni lamps and the use of Basotho blankets.

Nasara 2.0

TheUrbanative

The sweeping lines and organic forms of the Nasara 2.0 screen is inspired by the fan-shaped hairstyle worn by Queen Nasara, one of the wives of Chief Akenge in the DRC during the early 1900s. Historically within the continent, hair grooming was a way to identify someone’s social status based on ethnicity, social rank, age, material status, wealth, fertility, manhood, religion, and death. The process of styling and preparing the hair could last hours or days and was a very intimate and spiritual part of their wellness.
