OPEN CALL FOR DESIGNERS:
DESIGN A RECYCLING BIN

In a world overwhelmed by the need for sustainable solutions, we stand at a crossroads where our creative talents can significantly impact the future of our planet.

It's time we channel our ingenuity beyond the realms of conventional home furnishings—beyond another chair, couch, or sideboard—towards a cause that can alter the course of environmental conservation in South Africa: a recycling bin.

We invite you to design, or commission the design of a recycling bin that is not only functional,  but also a visually appealing piece of art that homeowners are proud to display.

This is an opportunity to design something that transcends mere utility; a product that changes behaviour, making recycling an effortless and integrated part of South African homes.

This isn't just about creating another household item; it's about using design as a powerful tool to shape environments, influence societal habits in the interest of a sustainable future.

As designers, we have a profound responsibility to consider the entire system our creations exist within, reflecting both social and moral considerations in our work.

Your design should embody sustainability not just in its function but in every aspect of its life cycle, from production to end-of-use.

We believe good design can empower communities, drive climate action, and cultivate a more hopeful tomorrow. It's about stewarding conditions that allow future generations to thrive, where good design is an active part of the solution.

Things to Consider When Designing a Recycling Bin

(Designs do not have to factor in ALL of these considerations, they are just guidelines)

User Experience
The design should prioritise ease of use, encouraging consistent recycling habits. Consider aspects such as the opening mechanism, compartmentalisation for different recyclables (e.g., glass, paper, plastics), and clear labeling.

Aesthetics
The bin should not just be a utility object but a piece of art that enhances the space it occupies. This involves thinking about materials, colours, and forms that can complement a variety of interior styles and preferences.

Sustainability
Materials chosen for the bin should have a low environmental impact, be recyclable, or come from renewable sources. The design process itself should minimise waste and consider the product's entire lifecycle.

Cultural Relevance
Design with the South African context in mind, considering local recycling practices, materials available, and cultural aesthetics. A design that resonates with local users will be more likely to be embraced and utilised.

Durability and Maintenance
The bin should be designed for longevity, with easy-to-clean surfaces and robust mechanisms that withstand regular use.

Cost-effectiveness
While quality and sustainability are paramount, consider the affordability of your design. Making the recycling bin accessible to a wider audience can have a greater impact on recycling rates.

Space Efficiency: Many homes may have limited space, so creating a design that is space-efficient or offers a flexible footprint can be a significant advantage.

Security and Safety
Ensure the design is safe to use, with no sharp edges or materials that could cause injury. Also, consider how the bin can protect its contents from animals or being blown away by the wind, if used outdoors.
