The year the industry came together
The year the industry came together
There is something different about seeing an industry come together in real life.
The conversations are quicker. Ideas move from one person to another. A product that might have passed unnoticed online suddenly becomes the thing everyone is talking about. A chance meeting becomes a new relationship. A conversation over coffee becomes the beginning of a project.
That was the feeling across Decorex Cape Town and Decorex Joburg in 2026.
From the first day in Cape Town to the final day in Johannesburg, the shows brought together the people who are designing, specifying, sourcing, building and shaping the spaces we live and work in. Designers met makers. Architects discovered new materials. Retailers connected with brands. Suppliers met the people looking for their next product, their next partner or their next idea.
And there was a real sense that the industry had something to say.
Across the two shows, the programme reflected how much the world of design has expanded. Interiors no longer sit in isolation. Property, architecture, hospitality, technology, retail, craftsmanship and lifestyle are increasingly part of the same conversation.
You could see that in the spaces themselves.
Future Talks brought leading voices from across the industry together to debate ideas and look ahead. The Property Show opened up conversations between property, architecture and interiors. Kramerville District brought one of Johannesburg's most recognisable design destinations into the exhibition. The Kitchen Project, Bedroom Project and Soft Life Design Pods showed how designers are responding to the way people want to live now.
Then there were the conversations happening everywhere else.
At stands. In the aisles. At talks. Over coffee. Between competitors. Between established names and emerging talent.
The strength of this year's trade audience was not simply that the right people attended, but that they arrived with something to do — to source, discover, specify, connect and look for what comes next. Cape Town's trade audience, for example, was strongly focused on future projects and product sourcing, while Joburg saw significant growth in trade participation and brought international buyers into the mix.
Perhaps that is what made 2026 feel particularly significant.
Decorex wasn't simply reflecting the industry. It was giving the industry a place to meet itself.
And judging by the response from exhibitors and visitors, those connections mattered. Exhibitors spoke about meeting new customers, reconnecting with familiar faces, discovering meaningful collaborations and, perhaps most importantly, feeling part of a community that is genuinely excited about where design is heading.
Two cities. Two very different design personalities. One incredibly energised industry.
If you were there, you were part of it.
If you weren't, 2026 was a year worth having been in the room for.
